One of the saddest divorces in music history, at least for me, was between Paul McCartney and John Lennon. The musical partnership they had and the songs it produced obviously changed the world, and for millions of people made it so much better. I've often daydreamed about the kind of songs Paul and John might have written together throughout the 70's and beyond if things were different, which led to the idea for this little ep, or double a-side single: I wanted to put later period Paul and John into conversation with each other in an interesting way.
Having read that John's return to music after his famous five year hiatus was at least in part, perhaps, due to a bit of jealousy after seeing Paul's video for the single "Coming Up", I thought it'd be cool to pair another song from McCartney II with one of from Double Fantasy. The result? This EP, which we've lovingly called Double Mantasy: it's a little love-letter to my two favorite Beatles, and the love they shared.
On "Waterfalls" we're joined by Pat and Zach from Rogue Wave, who provide the beats and beautiful vocals on the chorus. Rogue Wave was the first band I ever went out with on a proper US tour and we've been friends ever since. Working with them on this was really fulfilling and just an all around beautiful experience. Zach's vocal arrangements never cease to amaze me, and the Brian Wilson-esque treatment he gives each chorus is a testament to his talents. And Pat's drums? Let's just say there's an awful lot of us out there that think of Pat as our Ringo: he's the greatest.
